Tucked away on an idyllic stretch of beach away from the hustle and bustle of the Cancun hotel zone and Playa del Carmen lies Nizuc, a five star (or depending on who you read, 6 star) luxury resort on the southern tip of Cancun. If you’re a digital nomad like myself, this hotel is the perfect place to work on those projects that light you up, to be inspired and to unplug when you need to. So here’s my honest review of Nizuc Resort and Spa
Suitable for Business Travel: Yes Business Facilities: Yes Can you work here?: Yes Wifi: Yes. Fast and reliable throughout the property |
Authentic Mexico lives and breathes within these with world-class accommodations, from sumptuous room to luxury villas, guests are treated to exceptional dining, Mayan-inspired spa and treatments, beach massages, snorkeling, tennis and so much more. Nizuc is a luxury hotel offering 274 impeccably designed rooms and despite nearly always being booked at capacity, you never feel like it’s crowded. The hotel is also beginning to get the worldwide recognition it deserves having received awards from Conde Nast Traveller and Travel and Leisure as one of the top 20 hotels in Mexico. It also recently received an award from Luxury Travel as the most Instagrammable hotel in the world. It’s easy to see why Nizuc Resort and Spa reviews are so positive.
Nizuc is located only 15 minutes from the airport and maybe 20 minutes from the shops and nightlife of downtown Cancun. You can either arrange transport with the hotel directly or with a local provider like happy shuttle. Once you arrive you are greeted with a welcome cocktail and escorted to your room via a hotel golf cart. If you arrive prior to check in, you can leave your bags with the front desk and they will deliver your bags to your room when it’s ready.
Pro tip: Advise the hotel of your arrival time prior to your arrival and they will try to accommodate and early check in. I arrived at 10am and was quickly taken to my room that was ready and waiting for me
Once you arrive you your room, you are provided with a beach bag, mosquito repellent, sunscreen and a couple of sweet treats that are made in house. Why don’t more hotels provide you with mosquito repellent? A wonderful touch.
Authentic Mexico lives and breathes within these world-class accommodations, from sumptuous dining to exceptional rooms and luxury. Guests here are treated to exceptional Mayan-inspired spa and treatments, beach massages, snorkeling, tennis and so much more. The hotel grounds are located at the corner of a lagoon so if you love beach activities you’ll find ideal conditions here. The Caribbean side of the hotel is perfect if you’re looking for waves for playing in, or kayaking. The lagoon side of the hotel is ideal for those looking for calmer water and stand up paddling
There are also 3 pools located at Nizuc. One for adults only, one family friendly, and one quiet pool.
Being located on a lagoon, the hotel has some amazing scenery that makes it perfect for hosting events like weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. The Nizuc team knows how to set up the perfect party for any occasion. I happened to be here while the hotel was host an amazing birthday party and I was ready to crash it.
The hotel grounds are vast and you’ll even find secluded coves if you’re looking for more peace and privacy.
Sunrise here is magical. Taking a walk down to the pier at golden hour will not leave you disappointed. The water is calm, the beach is empty and the view is unforgettable.
Nizuc boasts 274 rooms but you never feel as if the hotel is busy (except at the spa and breakfast sometimes). There are 3 different types of rooms:
Located near the hotel lobby and steps away from the beach and hotel amenities. These suites are exclusively adults only. All suites feature a freestanding tub, rainfall shower and sitting area
Located towards the mangroves, these suites are more suitable for families and groups. As they are located a bit further from the lobby and amenities, there is complimentary golf cart transportation from the residential suites to the main hotel grounds. There are 8 types of Residential Suites: Garden View Double, One Bedroom Garden Jr. Suite, Ocean View Deluxe King, Ocean View Deluxe Double, Ocean View Junior Suite, Ocean View Junior Suite, Master suite, and Penthouse (featuring a plunge pool on the terrace)
These villas are the epitome of privacy and luxury. Here you’ll find 4 different villa options: Private Pool Villa, Private Pool Pavillion Villa, Nizuc Villa and Presidential Suite. I was given a private tour of the Private Pool Pavillion Villa and all I can say is WOW.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a reservation at the spa on this visit. Having just been awarded the first (and so far only) ESPA branded spa in Caribbean Mexico, it books up pretty quickly, especially if the hotel is hosting a special event during your stay. Prices here are also on the high side with treatments on par with spa prices in North America.
You can book treatments a la carte or signature therapy packages. I’m told their massages and facials are top notch. There’s always next time. Looking for a haircut and a manicure for a romatic night out? You can also book services at the hotel salon
With all the amazing food you’ll have at Nizuc, you might (keyword *might) feel the need to hit the gym. The gym here is amazing with top of the line weights, machines, personal training and fitness classes. Here you can also work on wellness as well with yoga, breath work and even sound healing classes available
Speaking of working off all the calories, the food at Nizuc is world class and no review of Nizuc Resort and Spa would be complete without discussing it. There are 6 dining experiences available here:
Ramona: featuring contemporary Mexican cuisine
Indochine: East meets west with a focus on Asian flavours and techniques
Ni: Inventive Peruvian cuisine
Cafe de La Playa: this is where you’ll find your a la carte breakfast and lunch in the most luxurious setting
La Punta Grill and Lounge: If you’re looking to keep it casual, come here. Featuring grilled seafood and meats on a beautiful outdoor patio
Terra Nostra: featuring Mediterranean cuisine and items cooked in a wood fired oven
Bar a Kan: This was my favourite place to sit back and relax with the best spicy margaritas I’ve ever had.
Havana Lounge: Featuring all the best rum cocktails you can think of. I also hate pina coladas, but the one here was incredible
Terra Nostra Lounge: Great cocktails and live music
Looking for more culinary experiences? Nizuc offers tequila tastings, as well as interactive sushi, taco, salsa, eclairs, pizza and ceviche making classes. I always say recipes are the best souvenirs to bring back home and you’ll bring back some great ones from these classes.
